Born Gianclaudio, but better known as Clay, Regazzoni began racing a De Tomaso in the early 1960s at the comparatively late age of 24. By 1970 he had won the European Formula Two Championship.
Regazzoni joined Ferrari for the latter part of the same season and made an immediate impression by winning in Italy and finishing third in the championship.
The next two years saw Regazzoni retire from strong positions and he could only finish seventh in the championship. He moved to BRM for 1973 but didn't taste success until he re-signed for Ferrari in 1974. He ended the season second in the championship behind Emerson Fittipaldi but the following two years brought only two more wins.
Regazzoni moved to Ensign in 1977 and Shadow in 1978 but the cars were not competitive and he didn't win again until racing for Williams at the 1979 British GP. He began the 1980 season with Ensign but crashed at the US West Grand Prix and was paralyzed from the waist down.
Regazzoni actively encouraged disabled people to race and helped develop hand-control systems for their cars. He died in a road accident in Italy in 2006.
