The son of a racing driver, Alan Jones raced a Mini as a teenager before coming to England in 1967 to further his career. He was offered a drive in Formula Three in 1974 and graduated to Formula Atlantic the following year.

Jones then moved to Formula One, driving a Hesketh and then joining Graham Hill's fledgling team. His aggressive driving style took him to his first race win in Austria in 1977. A move to Williams the following season gave him four more race wins and third place in the championship.

In 1980 Jones took the drivers' title with five wins and five more podiums, and he backed it up with another strong season in 1981, although he only finished third overall. He was lured our of retirement to drive for Arrows in 1983 and Lola in 1985/6 but he couldn't recapture the glory days and retired to concentrate on touring car racing and television commitments.
