Although Mike Hailwood is best known for his career on two wheels, he also competed in 50 Formula One grand prix. He was killed in a road accident, after going to collect a takeaway, with his son David and daughter Michelle. A truck made an illegal U-turn striking Hailwood's car. Michelle, aged nine, was killed instantly while David and Mike were taken to hospital where Mike died two days later, David was the only survivor. The truck driver was fined £100.

Spanish driver Jamie Alguersuari was born in Barcelona. He became the youngest F1 driver when he drove for Toro Rosso at the Hungarian Grand Prix in 2009 - he was 19.
2003
Malaysia hosted the second round of the F1 championship. Fernando Alonso scored his first pole position and his first podium; he also broke the record for the youngest driver to lead a grand prix. That stood until Sebastien Vettel led the Japanese Grand Prix in 2007.
1976
Brazilian driver Ricardo Zonta, who competed in 36 grand prix between 1999 and 2005, was born. He raced for BAR, Jordan and Toyota and was test driver for McLaren and Renault.
1933
British race driver John Taylor was born in Leicestershire, he competed in five grand prix between 1964 and 1966. He died after sustaining serious burns in an accident during the first lap of the German Grand Prix in 1966.
1915
British racing driver Arthur Owen was born; he competed in just one race, the Italian Grand Prix, in 1960. He spent his life as a jeweller in St. Heiler on the island of Jersey and died at his home in the Algarve in 2002 aged 87.
1936
American driver Bruce Kessler was born in Seattle, Washington. He tried, and failed, to qualify for the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix in a Connaught. He is better known as a TV director with his credits including Knight Rider, The A Team and Hart to Hart.
