Brazil hosted the second round of the F1 championship and the race was won by Ayrton Senna, who was so affected by cramp from an overtight harness at the end he had to be lifted from his car. He became the first Brazilian to win his home race since 1986. The anticipated finale between Senna and Nigel Mansell's Williams faded when Mansell retired 12 laps from the end with gearbox and transmission problems. Senna also had issues with his own gearbox but nursed his car to a 2.9-second victory over Riccardo Patrese.

Mark Webber voices his concerns about Michael Schumacher's comeback after one race of the Formula One season, saying "I have never ever seen a phenomenal comeback." Webber felt that Nico Rosberg would get the better of his more illustrious team-mate - who was returning to the sport for the first time since 2006 - and Webber added "I think it will be a bloody hard season for him."

American property tycoon Bob Said died of cancer aged 69; although he amassed his huge fortune in property his first love was motorsport, and he competed in the 1959 USA Grand Prix in a Connaught. He was also known as a TV producer, and once competed in the Olympic bobsleigh competition.
1988
French driver Roger Loyer died at the age of 80; he raced in the 1954 Argentine Grand Prix, in a Gordini T16, but failed to finish due to lack of oil pressure.
1923
British driver Brian Naylor was born in Salford, Manchester. He made seven grand prix starts between 1957 and 1961 but only finished twice; he retired to Marbella to run a cafe where he died in 1989 at the age of 66 as the result of an accident.
1915
One of the longest surviving competitors from the 1950 British Grand Prix was born. Frenchman Eugene Martin competed in a Talbot-largo, which he also used later that year in the Swiss Grand Prix. He died in 2006 at the age of 91.
