A determined Michael Schumacher won the Argentinean Grand Prix but the result left McLaren's David Coulthard fuming after the pair collided on the fifth lap as Schumacher tried to overtake and clipped him, sending him spinning. "I was angry," Coulthard said. "I have only got one point from a weekend that could have brought me 10 and that is a bitter pill to swallow. I don't think it was up to me at that instance to give way to him. There has to be some give and take between drivers otherwise collisions will happen. I suppose it's that sort of aggression which I guess is needed to get wins and on this day it's given him a win." Schumacher said: "David went a bit wide, but when I went for it he closed the door and left no room. But I did not want to lift off the pedal because I had the chance. The car was damaged after that which made it not nice to drive, but it was good enough."
1987
Alain Prost overcame searing heat to win his third Brazilian Grand Prix in four years, starting in fifth but taking the lead by the 13th lap. Nigel Mansell endured his all-too-familiar mechanical problems, not helped by paper debris being sucked into his engine, but took sixth place when Michele Alboreto's Ferrari broke down three laps from the end.
1981
Nelson Piquet won the Argentinean Grand Prix after taking the lead on the opening lap and retaining it throughout, but Carlos Reutemann moved to the top of the drivers' championship by virtue of his second place. Lotus boss Colin Chapman was fined US$100,000 for "discrediting the world championship" after protesting that pressure groups had prevented his team from taking part in the race.
1962
Scottish driver Ron Flockhart died when his Mustang crashed in the Dandenong Hills while preparing a second attempt to break the record from Australia to England. He had driven in 14 championship grands prix between 1956 and 1960, taking third in the 1956 Italian Grand Prix in his second outing and a sixth in France in 1960 for Lotus. In 1956, driving an ex-works Jaguar D-type for the small Scottish team Ecurie Ecosse, he won the Le Mans 24 hours endurance race with co-driver Ninian Sanderson. The following year he won again for the same team, this time with Ivor Bueb.
1961
Milan-born Corrado Fabi only had one full season in F1, only finishing twice in 15 starts for the Osella team in 1982. He got that drive on the back of winning the 1982 European Formula Two title. In 1984 he shared a Brabham Formula One drive, with his older brother Teo when Teo's commitments to CART racing in the USA took precedence. He raced briefly in Champcars before retiring to look after the family business interests.

The birth of Carlos Reutemann in Sante Fe, Argentina. A supremely talented racing driver, who at his best was untouchable, but he could just as easily turn in a performance of overwhelming mediocrity as he could reduce a field of the best drivers in the world to bit players. Never was this more apparent than at the end of 1981 when, poised on the brink of the World Championship and after clinching pole position in brilliant style, he faded badly to eighth place in a race in which he only had to place ahead of Nelson Piquet - who finished the race semi-conscious in fifth place - to take the title.

Marseille-born Robert Manzon was a mechanic whose driving ambitions were stalled by the war, but who went on to become an early presence in Formula One, taking part in 29 grands prix between 1950 and 1956, including third places in Belgium (1952) and France (1954).
1907
Eugene Chaboud, who was born on this day in Lyon, finished fifth in the 1950 French Grand Prix and eighth the following year, his only two finishes in three starts. He was an accomplished sports-car driver, winning the Le Mans 24-Hour in 1938. He quit after an accident at the same race in 1951 when he was trapped under his car for a long time and decided enough was enough.
1950
The birth of Flavio Briatore, the man who rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential - and controversial - men in Formula One and whose career will probably be remembered for his role in the disgraceful 'Crashgate' scandal. It was not the first time he had been in trouble. As a young man he was convicted of fraud and sentenced to prison for fraud, avoiding incarceration by fleeing abroad until he was legally able to return to Italy. Thereafter, until 2009, it seemed the only way was up.
