Jackie Stewart secured Matra's first victory in torrential rain at the Dutch Grand Prix - it was also the first by a French manufacturer, the first by a Cosworth engine in anything other than a Lotus and the first by a car managed by Ken Tyrrell. To complete a great day for the French aerospace company, Anthony Beltoise finished second in the Matra with their own V12 engine.
1963
Jim Clark secured the tenth grand prix victory for Lotus at the 1963 Dutch Grand Prix. Clark started from pole and shattered lap record after lap record beating the 100mph mark at Zandvoort for the first time and lapping every other competitor. Dan Gurney came home second ahead of John Surtees while Ireland, now driving for the British Racing Partnership in their BRP-BRM was fourth ahead of Richie Ginther.
1985
For the first time in ten years, the United States hosted only one Grand Prix. Finland's Keke Rosberg took the lead from pole-sitter Ayrton Senna on lap eight, avoided the tyre and brake problems that plagued the other front-runners, and held off the Ferraris of Stefan Johansson and Michele Alboreto to win. Stefan Bellof earned a scintillating fourth place for Tyrrell, scoring the last points for the legendary Cosworth-Ford V8 engine. The race marked Nelson Piquet's 100th grand prix start.
2002
Rubens Barrichello won the European Grand Prix at the Nurburgring after team-mate Michael Schumacher suffered a rare spin that dropped him to second.
1991
F1 drivers Johnny Herbert, Bertrand Gachot and Volker Wiedler celebrated winning the Le Mans 24 Hours. They won in a Japanese Mazda, the first time a car made outside of Western Europe won the prestigious race.
