A selfless act from Peter Collins at the Italian Grand Prix helped Juan Manuel Fangio clinch his fourth drivers' title. Collins himself could have won the title as Fangio dropped out with a broken steering arm but with just 15 laps to go, Collins pitted despite being in a position to take the title for himself and handed his car over to Fangio who went on to finish second, which was good enough.

Michael Schumacher broke Alain Prost's record of race wins to become the most successful race winner in the history of Formula One. Schumacher took the lead after half a lap and went on to win from David Coulthard and Giancarlo Fisichella. Despite his record breaking victory, the race will be remembered for a massive accident involving Luciano Burti and Eddie Irvine in the fast left-hander before Blanchimont, Burti's Prost losing its front wing and smashing into the tyre wall at speeds approaching 150mph.

The FIA announced that Hockenheim would undergo a major facelift in preparation for the 2000 season, the 4.24m track shortened to just under three miles, cutting out the Ostkurve section which used to be flat-out until it was slowed down in 1980.

Williams technical director Sam Michael confirmed that test driver Nico Hulkenberg was a strong contender for a race seat with the team for the 2010 season. Hulkenberg went on to cinch the GP2 title at Monza a week later.
