Rene Arnoux
Born: 4 July 1948, Near Grenoble, France Grand Prix Starts: 149 Grand Prix Victories: 7 Points Total: 179
Having just won the F2 championship in a works Martini, Rene Arnoux arrived in F1 in 1978 and ended the year driving for Surtees. In 1979 he moved to Renault and in the competitive RS10 he twice took pole, finishing second at both Silverstone and Watkins Glen.
Although winning two early races at Interlagos and Kyalami in 1980, Arnoux could not sustain his form and ended the year in sixth place, well adrift of Jones and Piquet. 1981 proved a thin year; he failed to convert speed into wins and a second in Austria was the highlight. Two wins in 1982 gained him sixth place in the championship, but a breach of team orders meant that it was his last season with Renault.
In 1983 he moved to Ferrari and won three GPs but failed to score in the last two rounds and finished third in the championship. His performance thereafter was disappointing and, after the opening round of the 1985 championship, he was fired. He spent the final four years of his F1 career with Ligier, gaining eighth place in the 1986 championships. The final three seasons yielded a total of just 3 points.
