World champion Jackie Stewart guided March to their first grand prix victory after winning the Spanish Grand Prix with such ease that he lapped everyone else taking part at least once.
What drama there was came on the opening lap when Jackie Oliver, who had lost his brakes, ploughed into Jacky Ickx and the pair careered into the barriers and burst into flames. Both drivers escaped with minor injuries and so intense was the fire that it continued to burn for an hour and a half. The race also marked Mario Andretti's first ever podium finish, the American finishing third in his March ahead of Graham Hill's Lotus.

Jean Bugatti could not control his joy and leapt over the parapet of the bleachers and fell into Chiron's arms.
