Hamilton wins the Monaco GP with a masterstroke of a drive.
His first and only pitstop wasn’t for the right tire as Mercedes put him on the Medium tires as opposed to the Hards like the rest of field, giving him a huge disadvantage towards the later stages of the race.
The Medium tires were predicted to last only 50 laps by Perilli and yet Hamilton made them go over 60 !
Max was pressuring Hamilton all the way and in the closing two laps made a poor overtaking maneuver at the end of the tunnel and almost took himself and Hamilton out of contention. Hamilton took to the scap path and kept his place. Max was on Hamilton’s tail on the more durable Hard tire since the first round of pit stops.
Vettel hang back in third but was promoted to second given Max was given an 5 second penalty for an unsafe release in the pits – where he almost drove into Bottas during their stops.
Bottas for his turn wasn’t really in the race given the car’s potential and how difficult it is to overtake in Monaco – after his incident with Max he pitted again for the hard tires and set pretty behind Vettel for the rest of the race.
