On this day... 08 June (1975) - Brise flickers briefly

The Swedish Grand Prix at Anderstorp marked the high point of a promising driver's career that was cut tragically short soon afterwards.

Tony Brise finished sixth for Graham Hill's fledgling team after qualifying well down in 17th. Brise was killed later that year in the plane crash that also killed Hill and other key members of the team. The race was won by Niki Lauda - his third on the trot - after Carlos Reutemann suffered throttle problems which forced him to slow in the closing stages.

2008

Lewis Hamilton looked odds-on for another victory at the Canadian Grand Prix before he made an astonishing mistake and ran into Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari in the pit lane. By lap 15, Hamilton was 7.1 seconds ahead of Robert Kubica with Raikkonen close behind in third. It was at this point that Adrian Sutil stopped at the back of the track, leading to a safety car period. The pitlane opened on lap 19 and the leaders headed in. Hamilton's stop was longer than either Raikkonen or Kubica and he was on the throttle when he chased the duo down the pitlane. But Hamilton did not realise that they had stopped and by the time he did, it was too late. Nico Rosberg also made the same mistake and hit the back of Hamilton. With two of the front runners out, Robert Kubica took his first ever victory and the first for BMW Sauber. Nick Heidfeld came home to make it a 1-2 finish for the German-Swiss team.

1968

Italian racing driver Ludovico Scarfiotti was killed at a hillclimbing event on the Roßfeldhöhenringstraße near Berchtesgaden, Germany, in the German Alps. He became the third grand prix driver to die in 1968, following Jim Clark and Mike Spence. Scarfiotti wrecked his Porsche 910 during trials when the car veered abruptly off the Rossfeldstrasse track and catapulted ten yards down a tree-covered slope. The Porsche hung in the trees and Scarfiotti was thrown from the cockpit, his body landing fifty yards away. Prior to entering Formula One, he won the 1963 24 Hours of Le Mans for Ferrari and later participated in 12 grands prix and many non-championship races. He won one world championship race, and scored a total of 17 championship points. A motor sports competitor for a decade, Scarfiotti won the European mountain driving title in 1962. He was proclaimed Italy's best driver in both 1962 and 1965.
